Salvation Army Angel Tree Applications Coming Up

Ho! Ho! Ho!

Don't panic! Christmas is NOT around the corner, but Christmas assistance deadlines are! The Love Tree (Harrodsburg Herald) will only accept completed applications on Thursdays and Fridays in September and October while the Salvation Army Angel Tree will take applications from Monday, September 30 thru Thursday, October 3. So get those forms filled out early as there will be minimal assistance outside of these two programs. Flyers for the Angel Tree indicating what information you need to bring to your appointment as well as Love Tree applications are available from the Burgin Family Connections FRYSC office. Contact Ms. Perkins at 748-5282 ext. 102 for a copy or drop by her office the next time you're in the school SOON! The holidays will be here before you know it!

Every time you eat a school lunch, you’ll get a ticket for our weekly drawing.  Each Friday afternoon, we’ll draw five tickets out of the box, and those five students will get their choice of one free item from the cafeteria a la carte shop.  Winners will be announced Friday afternoon over the school intercom.

Free Summer Meals for Kids - TIME UPDATE!

This Summer, school may be out, but all kids can eat free, thanks to the Burgin Bulldog Café!


During the month of July, we’ll be taking our meals on the road!  Lunch will be free for all kids 18 and under, and adults can eat too for a small fee ($4.25).  Catch us at one of our open sites at the times listed below… every site is open to anyone who would like to participate.  We’ll also be providing story time and book giveaways as volunteers and donations allow.

Dates: July 1st – July 26th (except July 4th)

Burgin Academy Summer Program

Burgin Academy has had a great year! The final day of the Burgin Academy program for the 2019-2020 school year is Thursday, May 9th. But the fun doesn’t stop there! Burgin Academy will return Monday, June 3rd, for the all-day summer program, which runs Monday - Friday, June 3rd - 28th, 8am - 2pm. Congratulations to Hunter Lester, Logan Keebortz, and Matt Kirkpatrick for earning the industry certification in plant science. Hunter, a junior, will be graduating early and attending Bluegrass Community Technical College in the Fall 2019, to study diesel mechanics. Logan, a senior, will also be attending Bluegrass Community Technical College in the Fall 2019, studying computer science. Matt, a senior, will be attending Campbellsville University in the Fall 2019 to study welding.

Outstanding Alumni Nomination Form

Do you know an outstanding Burgin alum who has done great things in their career or for the community? Nominate them for the Burgin Independent School Outstanding Alumni Award! The Outstanding Alumni Program recognizes Burgin graduates, attendees, or contributors to the school system who have distinguished themselves in their professional lives or community and in so doing have brought honor and recognition to our school. Nominations forms and instructions can be found here. The deadline for submission is April 26th, 2019.

Kindergarten Screenings

Burgin Independent is now scheduling appointments for kindergarten screenings for the 19-20 school year. If you have a child who will be 5 years old before August 1, 2019 and live in the Burgin School district please call Erica at 859.748.5282 ext. 0 to set up your appointment. The screening dates are April 10, 11, and 12. 
If you do not live in the Burgin School district and would like to fill out a tuition application to see if your child would be eligible to attend Burgin School, please stop by the school office to pick up an application.

Burgin Board of Education Regular Meeting, January 9th, 2019

The Burgin Board of Education held its first meeting for 2019 on Wednesday, January 9th, 2019. Two new board members, Katrina Sexton and Zachary Gross, and one re-elected board member, Bob Clark, were sworn in at the beginning of the meeting to start their new terms. Mr. Clark was elected board chair, and Mr. Keith Monson was elected board vice chair.

Sarah Steele, Burgin Independent School’s transition ready counselor, was awarded the YES! (Your Excellence Shows) Award for January. Ms. Steele was recognized for all the ways she goes above and beyond to provide opportunities for the students of Burgin Independent School.

Principal Chris LeMonds also announced that Burgin will be receiving a $5,000 Lowes Grant to purchase math manipulatives for elementary students.

Burgin Independent Bulldog NTI Days

Rain, sun, sleet or snow - Burgin students are ready to go!

What is a Bulldog Non Instructional (NTI) Day

At Burgin Independent, we believe in the power of learning at any time and in any place. We are participating in NTI days as a result of a waiver granted by the Kentucky Department of Education and approved by the Burgin Board of Education.

How will I know that Burgin Independent is using the Bulldog NTI Day Plan?

Bulldog NTI day will be announced in all the same ways a snow day is communicated. We will use the OneCall telephone call, social media announcement, local media (TV, radio), and the Burgin Independent website to clearly state that schools are closed, and that an NTI day will be used. The first two NTI Packets will be sent home on December 5th.

What is my child expected to do on a Bulldog NTI Day?

Grades K-5 NTI Packets will include activities in the content areas for a total of 3-4 hours/day. Assignments will include a variety of content assignments, games, paper/pencil type activities with options for online learning activities, if you have Wifi access. Online links will be provided on the Burgin Website or in their packet.

6-12 NTI Packets- each teacher will have an assignment from their classes that will be either in the form of a packet or online with Google Classroom. Students must request a packet if they do not have Internet access at home.

What is my role as a parent during a Burgin NTI Day?

Encourage and support your student.  Most of the activities being assigned are designed to be completed at an independent level.  Students may need your assistance in gathering materials and/or with time management.

Parents, you are asked to write the date and to put your signature on each assignment completed for each NTI Day AND return the dated and signed NTI packet to school on the first day back.

How can my child receive help with his/her learning, if needed?

Send a remind message, dojo message, or email to your child’s teacher.
